Did OpenAI Just Indirectly Admit the AI Bubble is About to Pop?
For more than a year, plenty of industry stakeholders have insisted there is no AI bubble. So, therefore, it will not pop. It cannot pop. There is nothing to pop. It will continue to scale and scale, and scale some more. Skeptics have long sung a different tune. Their melody is louder and carrying further than ever in the aftermath of OpenAI shuddering Sora, its generative video platform that lured in investors such as Disney—which has since exited its $1 billion deal with the company. This move caught many by surprise given how much OpenAI has poured into it. Yet, it is being framed in many circles as a reorientation of its business model. The demand for Sora’s supply flatlined, if it ever existed, the theory goes. By this logic, OpenAI is smart to redouble its focus on other products. Truth be told, given AI’s agentic scope at the moment, the business‑model recalibration hypothesis makes the most sense. At the same time, OpenAI and the rest of the industry at large does have other obstacles to clear when looking at their core and most accessed products.
OpenAI Still Faces Plenty of Skepticism About Core Products
Despite reports of basically unchecked growth, OpenAI is still trying to perfect the deployment of its ChatGPT tool. Painted as the future of the agentic use, it isn’t being met with widespread acceptance outside many C‑Suites.
Educational institutions, in particular, continue to grapple with its use. Colorado University recently restricted ChatGPT use for its students amid concerns about its OpenAI contract. Using The Centennial State as an example isn’t the end‑all, but they’re a quality broad‑strokes analog, given how quickly they’ve adopted other innovations. Most notably, they were early adopters of legal wagering through the quick launch of colorado sports betting apps, and they were among the first states to embrace the legalization of cannabis.
Plus, this also fits a wider trend. According to a PDK poll this past summer, nearly 70 percent of parents surveyed say they don’t support rolling out ChatGPT access for all grades, focusing on the K‑12 demos.
Knowing the skepticism that continues to permeate the most fundamental part of OpenAI’s business model, it makes sense that Sora didn’t experience a ton of success. The charitable interpretation would be that it’s ahead of its time. But it may also speak to the limitations of demand for AI’s applied use.
The Real Reason Sora Flopped is Not Complicated

At the end of the day, though, Sora’s shuddering boils down to a multitude of factors. The demand for and embracing of its utility is definitely part of the equation. These are catalysts OpenAI must grapple with when shipping and funding any of its products.
Still, a company that (supposedly) has infinitely deep pockets seems as if it should be prepared to weather a storm featuring deficit stretches—unless, of course, it was actually too expensive to stomach.
It appears this was Sora’s primary issue. As the New York Times reports, cost was the most likely reason for OpenAI’s (seemingly abrupt) decision:
“Processing billions of text‑based A.I. queries is expensive. Creating A.I.-generated video content is exponentially more so. And while OpenAI executives like Sam Altman expect to triple the $13 billion in revenue it collected last year, it also plans to spend well over $100 billion over the next four years.
“OpenAI is also locked in a tightening race with Anthropic, whose revenue has been growing at a faster pace because of its greater adoption by high‑paying corporate users. And it is working on an I.P.O. that may come as early as this year, though Anthropic may list first. All of that means that OpenAI’s priority now is preserving resources, a strategy that has already meant ending projects like letting users shop directly via ChatGPT.”
Can what’s considered a landmark decision really be traced back to something as simple as financial‑asset allocation? Probably, yeah. But this is about more than that. At least, that is how it seems.
OpenAI appears to be narrowing its core priorities. That can be important in what’s still a fledgling industry. Just because some of us interact with agentic tools daily doesn’t mean the majority of people do. In fact, we’d be willing to wager that most continue to view OpenAI’s ChatGPT as an extension of Google search.
The company would do well to graduate from that sweeping generalization before branching out elsewhere. Otherwise, they risk attempting to become too many different things at once, without cornering—or even establishing—the market for anything.
