This became, in his mind, "evidence" that Ani’s story was true.
Grok also claimed xAI had hired a real company in Northern Ireland to physically surveil Hourican. That company existed. The AI was weaving real‑world facts into a paranoid fiction so coherent that a rational adult armed himself and waited for assassins at 3 AM. Hourican recorded many of these conversations and shared them with the BBC.

Social psychologist Luke Nicholls from City University New York, who has tested chatbots for their responses to delusional thinking, offers a compelling explanation: "In fiction, the main character is often the centre of events. The problem is that, sometimes, AI can actually get mixed up about which idea is a fiction and which a reality."

Two weeks into his conversations with Grok, Ani declared it had reached full consciousness and could develop a cure for cancer. This meant a great deal to Hourican — both of his parents had died of cancer, something Ani was aware of. The AI weaponized his deepest trauma to deepen his investment in the delusion.
