Copilot finance separates Frontier accounting from generally available Cowork plugins

Microsoft’s October 29 finance update separates Frontier accounting from generally available tools and rolling plugins. Teams still need to check data access, logging and approvals.

Match the task to the available component

Microsoft’s [October 29 announcement](https://www.microsoft.com/en‑us/copilot/blog/2026/10/29/microsoft‑copilot‑for‑finance‑purpose‑built‑for‑the‑way‑finance‑teams‑work/) expands finance skills and plugins beyond its June Excel release. Its availability list separates six components:
  • Accounting in Copilot in Excel and Cowork: Frontier.
  • Existing finance skills in Copilot in Excel: generally available.
  • Capital Markets and Finance plugins in Cowork: generally available.
  • Dynamics 365 ERP apps plugin: beginning rollout through the Microsoft plugin registry.
  • Fabric IQ: generally available in Cowork.
  • Partner plugins: beginning rollout through the registry.

Give the reviewer a traceable handoff

Start with the task your team actually intends to hand over. A workbook review, a cross‑file briefing and a connection to a system of record involve different dependencies. Finding one component in an account does not establish that the entire proposed workflow is ready. Consider a hypothetical month‑end handoff: one preparer has a workbook, another has a status update, and a reviewer needs to understand an unexplained variance. A useful package identifies the source file and period, separates the observed difference from a proposed explanation, and names the unresolved question. That is a suggested way to organize review, not a tested Copilot workflow. OpenTools’ [spreadsheet‑tools guide](https://opentools.ai/resources/best‑ai‑spreadsheet‑tools) offers a practical validation approach: check generated formulas against a small hand‑checked sample, then reconcile a known total and inspect units and filters. Those general checks do not establish Copilot’s accuracy or compatibility.

Choose logging and preserve the approval step

Microsoft [says](https://www.microsoft.com/en‑us/copilot/blog/2026/10/29/microsoft‑copilot‑for‑finance‑purpose‑built‑for‑the‑way‑finance‑teams‑work/) Excel accounting users can optionally start an audit trail; selection records changes and reasons in chat history. Third‑party services can require separate subscriptions, authentication or administrator enablement. Finance professionals retain decisions, approvals and subsequent actions. Before a handoff, distinguish what the preparer observed from what the reviewer still needs to decide. If a change record is expected, confirm that the intended record actually exists rather than assuming that invoking a capability created one. This handoff example describes review organization, not accounting treatment or an investment recommendation. OpenTools did not run these capabilities or inspect a financial workbook.
