EAC approves university AI module; national adoption remains a next step
The module targets undergraduates across disciplines; states must consider adoption and IUCEA must develop its rollout framework.
Approval across disciplines
The [October 31 EAC announcement](https://www.eac.int/press‑releases/138‑education%2C‑science‑technology‑news/3612‑eac‑ministers‑adopt%20‑regional‑artificial‑intelligence‑and‑digital‑transformation‑strategies%2C‑approve‑establishment‑of‑regional‑ai‑foundational‑module‑for‑universities?highlight=WyJib3JkZXIiLCJidWlsZGluZyIsInRiIiwiYnVkZ2V0Iiwic3VibWlzc2lvbiIsIm50YnMiLCJvc2JwIiwiZWJvbGEiLCJsdmJjIiwiZWFiYyJd) approves an AI foundational module for undergraduates irrespective of discipline. That is a regional curriculum decision, not evidence that every degree already requires the course.
National consideration and regional delivery
[Partner States were directed to consider adoption](https://www.eac.int/press‑releases/138‑education%2C‑science‑technology‑news/3612‑eac‑ministers‑adopt%20‑regional‑artificial‑intelligence‑and‑digital‑transformation‑strategies%2C‑approve‑establishment‑of‑regional‑ai‑foundational‑module‑for‑universities?highlight=WyJib3JkZXIiLCJidWlsZGluZyIsInRiIiwiYnVkZ2V0Iiwic3VibWlzc2lvbiIsIm50YnMiLCJvc2JwIiwiZWJvbGEiLCJsdmJjIiwiZWFiYyJd), while the Inter‑University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) must develop a regional implementation framework. Approval and delivery therefore remain separate stages for universities.
Ministers also approved a university AI network and agreed to develop Kiswahili AI certification benchmarks. The announcement does not supply benchmark results or a student enrolment date. The council acknowledged financial and resource constraints affecting implementation.
