Google is rolling out changes to its AI Overviews in search results, now showcasing cited pages prominently on the right. In addition to this new layout, Google is testing clickable linked text within summaries and introducing features like savable AI Overviews and simplified summaries.

Google is introducing a significant change in the presentation of AI Overviews in its search results by relocating cited pages to a new display on the right side of the AI-generated summaries. This adjustment ensures that relevant links are more prominently featured, enhancing user navigation by making it easier to access the original content. Previously, these links were buried within the summary text, which could make it challenging for users to locate the sources.

Hema Budaraju, Google's senior director of product management for Search, highlighted the intention behind this layout change. By utilizing the right-hand side space for displaying links, Google aims to improve the browsing experience by providing a clear pathway to the content users are interested in. Despite this new display method, traditional search results will still appear beneath the AI Overviews, offering a layered approach to information access.

Alongside this layout change, Google is experimenting with embedding links directly within the text of AI Overviews. This feature allows users to click on linked text to navigate to relevant websites, thereby integrating the new display method with in-text links for a more cohesive user experience. Initial testing of these changes has shown promising results, with increased traffic to publishers' sites.

Google is also enhancing the functionality of AI Overviews through additional features being tested in Search Labs. These include the ability to save AI Overviews for future reference, which can be particularly useful for users who wish to revisit the summaries. Saved overviews will be accessible on the user's Interests page, offering a personalized way to manage and retrieve information.

Another upcoming feature is the 'simplify' button, which allows users to condense the content of AI Overviews even further. This functionality aligns with Google's broader aim of making information easier to digest and access. Both the saving and simplifying features are part of the 'AI Overviews and more' experiment available for English language queries in the US.

The initial rollout of AI Overviews began in the US in May, and Google is now expanding the feature to additional countries, including the UK, India, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil. The new format, which supports local languages, aims to provide a seamless user experience across different regions. However, the launch in the US faced some hiccups, with bizarre recommendations like adding glue to pizza or consuming rocks, which Google has since rectified by manually removing these responses.

When questioned about maintaining the quality of responses in new markets, Budaraju assured that Google employs rigorous evaluation processes and extensive adversarial testing. These measures are designed to ensure that AI Overviews deliver accurate and safe information, although the company acknowledges that creating a perfect search experience is an ongoing challenge.

Overall, these enhancements to AI Overviews reflect Google's commitment to continuously improving search functionality and user experience. By adapting the layout and introducing new features, Google aims to make its AI-generated summaries more accessible, reliable, and user-friendly. These changes not only benefit individual users but also drive increased traffic to publisher sites, demonstrating a balanced approach to innovation in search technology.
